5 Minute Interview: Alan Rea

29 07 2009

AlanWho are you?
Alan Rea

Where do you work and what do you do?
Queen’s university, Belfast. I work in the systems support team for the web service.

What are your main areas of interest?
My main interest is the support infrastructure for the web services rather than the provision of web content.

Are you working on anything exciting at the moment
We were a died in the wool Sun Solaris group but are currently in throes of moving the web service to Centos based servers. This is not just a change of Operating System but an upgrade of our entire web service. This went live the week before the IWMW. This is a tense time as we have a large variation in the nature and age of our content and despite testing expect a number of problems with the move.

Have you been to IWMW before?
Yes, Bath 2000, Belfast 2001, Strathcylde 2002, Birmingham 2004 and Manchester 2005. I have missed the past couple of workshops for family reasons and I’ve been really looking forward to this one.

What are you hoping to get out of the event?
The IWMW workshops are always interesting and rewarding, there are always sessions that will stimulate new ideas. Plus the social side of the workshops have been very enjoyable.

What have you enjoyed so far?
I really enjoyed Paul Boag’s talk. He was saying stuff that we’ve been thinking for a while. He’s a really active and dynamic speaker and did a great job of coping when things went wrong! It’s all been great so far but yesterday was a very tiring day!!!
