Monday Night Social

Rose and CrownWill you be in Essex on the Monday night before the event starts?

If so we are going to be meeting up in the Rose and crown pub in Wivenhoe (The Quay, Wivenhoe, Colchester, Essex, CO7 9BX) from 7pm. Food is available till 8pm. After 8 our options are fish and chips (till 9), the Black Buoy till fairly late, and the Indian restaurant till very late. All within walking distance of the Rose and Crown.

A list of pubs and restaurants in Wivenhoe is available on the IWMW Web site.

It’s a 20 minute walk into Wivenhoe from the Campus (directions on Google maps).

Who’s up for it?!! Post a comment on the blog.

The route marked on this blog post is different to the one linked to, and Google says 56 minutes! There does appear to be a footpath cutting across the fields marked on OS maps which might be quicker (if you don’t get lost!)

I’m travelling down Monday afternoon so hope to be there.

Spot on! Our small group from Cumbria will be arriving on Monday and I’m sure we’ll be ready for refreshment after the trek. See you there?

That map’s a little bit wrong… It starts from a housing estate about half a mile on the wrong side of campus, and ends up near the cemetery, rather than down by the river!

Try this one: http://tinyurl.com/lemy92
Note that it starts from the Wivenhoe road, rather than the centre of campus: this is because Google’s map provider insists on making one of our roads one-way, when it’s not. It even thinks you can’t *walk* the other way down a one-way road. Sigh. Google says about half an hour to walk; I’d say 20-30 minutes, but longer if you get distracted by the Horse and Groom and/or the Greyhound en route (don’t get distracted by the Flag – it’s not worth it). Basically, all you do, is get on the road into Wivenhoe and follow that road all the way down to the river.

Or even this one: http://tinyurl.com/lr88gl … which actually does start from very near the Walton House accommodation.

Sorry about that – have now embedded Keith’s map instead!

There’s something going wrong when you embed it, Marieke: the embedded one still finishes up at the cemetery! The best one is http://tinyurl.com/lr88gl

I think this FAQ explains it:

Why do the Google Maps APIs Geocoders provide different locations than Google Maps?
The API geocoder and Google Maps geocoder sometimes use different data sets (depending on the country). The API geocoder occasionally gets updated with new data, so you can expect to see results changing or improving over time.

I think we can probably blame Royal Mail’s licensing conditions for the difference.

Nice that they keep ‘improving’ our evening drinks location to the cemetery 😉

I strongly recommend walking down to the river and using the Wivenhoe Trail to walk into Wiv. It’s a much nicer walk than the roads. The tide will be on it’s way out on Monday evening, so the character of the river changes. The route is clearly marked on an OS map and finishes on the Quay just up from the Rose & Crown.

We hope to be there in time for some of the fun! Depends which bus we manage to catch from Stansted airport.

Debbie, Keith and the Essex crew will be about on the Monday night so if people are around we can meet up in the Student Union bar (from 6ish) and walk in together.

There is a bus stop not far from there too so if it is bad weather we can just get the bus to Wivenhoe.

Good point – the Wivenhoe Trail is lovely, as long as it’s not raining. And yes, we’ll be on campus and walking down to the Rose and Crown with people too, and we usually manage to find our way.

Chris, Joe and I will be travelling up from Southampton, and should be around Monday evening (assuming no travel nightmares…).
